Raquel Maynez ’MD 25

Being accepted into medical school can be such a thrill. However, that thrill can easily be overshadowed by pending debt.

Raquel Maynez, a scholarship recipient, and second-year medical student decided to attend University of Utah’s School of Medicine because of supporters like you. “Medical school is expensive, so having scholarships that help me avoid and minimize debt is incredible in terms of my mental health and then also my future career prospects.”

Thanks to supporters like you, the majority of our students get awarded for their exceptional grades and community service with scholarships that help reduce tuition and other costs incurred in medical school. Although debt is still a financial challenge, their burden is lessened by the support you provide.

Incoming students, like Raquel, in the School of Medicine want to provide “compassionate, comprehensive healthcare to everyone in our community.” A first-generation American, Raquel learned first-hand how challenging healthcare can be when experienced through an interpreter or as a child needing to interpret for her parents. As a doctor, Raquel wants to be part of that movement to give back and support underrepresented communities in medicine. “It’s all about empathy and for patients to feel comfortable and open with their providers if they look like them or if they understand them better.”

Thank you for supporting these medical students. Scholarships cover our students’ tuition, fees, books, and other expenses. Equally important, scholarships ensure that top candidates continue to choose our medical school—so Utahns have access to the most qualified physicians possible.

Your gift to scholarships is one way of supporting your alma mater.

Please help students at the University of Utah Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine thrive. We are a top-ranked program because of you—our alum.

Thank you for your first gift of support and for continuing to support our students.
